Medical Bills Cause 62 Percent of Bankruptcies

A study released Thursday by the American Journal of Medicine finds a huge increase—nearly 20 percent—in medical bankruptcies between 2001 and 2007. Sixty-two percent of all bankruptcies filed in 2007 were tied to medical expenses. Three-quarters of those who filed for bankruptcies in 2007 had health insurance.

Using a conservative definition, 62.1% of all bankruptcies in 2007 were medical; 92% of these medical debtors had medical debts over $5000, or 10% of pretax family income. The rest met criteria for medical bankruptcy because they had lost significant income due to illness or mortgaged a home to pay medical bills. Most medical debtors were well educated, owned homes, and had middle-class occupations. Three quarters had health insurance. Using identical definitions in 2001 and 2007, the share of bankruptcies attributable to medical problems rose by 49.6%. In logistic regression analysis controlling for demographic factors, the odds that a bankruptcy had a medical cause was 2.38-fold higher in 2007 than in 2001.

In 2007, before the current economic downturn, an American family filed for bankruptcy in the aftermath of illness every 90 seconds; three quarters of them were insured.

Since 2001, the proportion of all bankruptcies attributable to medical problems has increased by 50%. Nearly two thirds of all bankruptcies are now linked to illness.

How did medical problems propel so many middle-class, insured Americans toward bankruptcy? For 92% of the medically bankrupt, high medical bills directly contributed to their bankruptcy. Many families with continuous cover- age found themselves under-insured, responsible for thou- sands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs. Others had private coverage but lost it when they became too sick to work. Nationally, a quarter of firms cancel coverage immediately when an employee suffers a disabling illness; another quarter do so within a year. Income loss due to illness also was common, but nearly always coupled with high medical bills.

A Night with CEO of Great Eastern, Dato Khor

A long-awaited dinner with Dato Khor and OSS Agency Members was finally held in Empire Shopping Gallery, Di Wei Restaurant @ 29/8/2013.

The ambience is classy and modern. There is a room specially reserved for us. This dinner, was treated as an award session to member who qualified for a special contest held on our agency to stimulate sales growth. And of course, I am one of the qualifier.. *proud face*.. =P

Dato Khor, is a very friendly person with lots of passion in insurance industry. He shared with us the path he went thru since young before he success. He teaches us a lot of things and those ideas in doing sales are so precious.

The dinner, of course was so delicious and all members are so satisfied.

The second purpose served for this dinner was a half-yearly award ceremony for 1st and 2nd quarter, Top Producer, Top NOC and Top Recruiter of OSS Agency. I am so surprise and happy when I got to know I am the Top NOC Awardees for 2nd quarter. Worth to mention, I have been contracted with OSS Agency in March, could not believe that I got this award in short period of time.

Dato Khor was then invited to give a speech to us. All members were so much motivated by him, we then accepted the challenges given by him, we will fight for sales and if Hui Hong GSM became the Top Rookie GSM of 2013, we will all be invited to a celebration dinner with Dato Khor again, and all expenses will be bared by company.

MDRT DAY - SETIA CITY CONVENTION CENTRE

I am so lucky to get a free ticket for the emission to the MDRT Day @ 24/8/2013 at Setia City Convention Centre. I am attending this event with my colleagues Renee Wong & Su Ching..

This is an awesome event overall. Attendees are so highly motivated by different invited speakers whom are all qualifiers of MDRT for few years. We have learned a lot of skills, listen to their sharing definitely worth our time and our effort to travel all the way from Cheras to Setia City Convention Centre in early morning.

True, it is not whether you WISH to make it to MDRT, it is whether you WANT to make it to MDRT. Wish and want is two very powerful words where can potentially leads the results either to be normal, or extraordinary. It is how much you want to determine how far you reached.

Okay, fighting mode on!

Why Do You Do Saving?

So as refer to the title, why do you do saving? Do you have a clear set of financial goals in life, or you are just following the society trend where the old people will tell you, "Boy, save your money for your future." ?

Besides, quite a number of the young people nowadays do not even save a sen, they spend everything within a month. Reason being the expenses are too high, the income is too low to sustain a better lifestyle. And yes, did I just mentioned a "better lifestyle"? I will say so is because most of my friends around me, they are earning average income, but are always desired for so many things, branded stuff, shopping, better restaurant for a gang meet up session, or perhaps just an expensive coffee after a day of work. There is only one thing in their mindset "SPEND".

Of course, I am not saying all of the young people are like this, I do have friends who have a very clear financial goals and save a lot of money at such a young age. There is an interesting fact that I have found out, ignore the family financial background and lets just count on the average income young people, the people who like to show how luxury their life is to their peers are normally top spender whom do not save, they do not have financial freedom but yet they makes people feel that they are really rich, ironical, isn't it? Hey buddy, saving equals to cash flow, and cash flow, is the thing that will bring you security, worry-free and blissful life for your future.

Saving will brings you security plus worry-free life for future

Some sarcastic people might say, "hello, save for what? There are so many uncertainties in life, I might be dying at young age, why not used up my money and enjoy my life right now?". Yeah, you are right buddy, but how if you live longer than you expected? What if you meet someone you love, and wishing to start a blissful family? What if you started to aim for a better car when your peers are all starting to upgrade their cars? What if you wish to buy a house and have a more stable life instead of renting a house from others? The later you start to plan your saving, the more money you will need to save due to the cost of delay, inflation and etc. You might need to work at the age you suppose to retire just because you did not save during young.

Do not spend all of your retirement money while you are still young.

Not to mention retirement, you would not want to beg others when you need emergency fund but you do not have any. Try to imagine, what will it be if you need money, you lose your ability to work, but you have no saving. Sad, isn't it?

I am not asking you not to spend nor make yourself suffer in order to save money, of course you can buy whatever you want and live the lifestyle you dreamed of. Yes, you can spend, if you already have a good planning in saving and remained a certain cash flow, you can then spend so happily and freely on what is remained after saving, am I right? I am just asking you to balance out and re-shaped your spending behavior. The main idea is like this,

Do not SAVE what is leftover after spending, SPEND what is leftover after saving.

You get what I mean? This is also the saving concept from Li Ka Shing, if you know who is him, the richest person of East Asian descent from Hong Kong.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Let your money work for you by investing it in low risk or even no-risk saving plan. It is going to benefit you and helped you to save a certain amount of money or even more at a specific year. I am going to share more on our products info in future posts. Or you can contact me or comment below if you wish to understand on the saving plan more.

Wishing you to have a financial worry-free life in the future  by having a good planning now!

Happy Saving!

Everyday, I am given ample of product training, to enhance my skill, to serve my customer better. The more training I had attended, the more I feel that insurance agent is a very professional career that going to help others to make their dreams come true. It is a personal advisor to tailor made the life plan for each individual / family, to make sure they can live the life they wanted, worry-free from unexpected, unfortunate life event, and even helping them to plan and to reach their desire financial goals in life.

Insurance agent, is then, the angel of the family, when any unfortunate events happened to the one of the family member, we are right there to support the others members to continue living. We might not able to replace what is unreplaceable, but life goes on, at least we ease the financial burden of the family when the main source of income corrupted.
